According to the head of local TAT office, the Tourism Authority in Thailand will market Phuket as a wedding and honeymoon destination in chosen markets like India. Travelers will need to find a wedding resort in Phuket for that sort of wedding.
TAT’s South Region 4 director, BangornratShinaprayoon said the TAT will provide special promotions to attract huge wedding parties to Phuket.
“Phuket is next only to Bangkok for a number of foreign couples opting their wedding parties to happen in Thailand. It is also the number one choice among engaged couples wanting to tie the knot on this beautiful beach setting,” she said.
The TAT focuses more on Indian engaged couples as they are known for luxuriant and very expensive marital services.
Mrs. Bangornrat said, “Indian weddings are the biggest with the group composed of 300 to 500 guests gracing the occasion and spending more than a million baht.”
This was hosted by the Banyan Tree resort in Laguna Phuket.
“Indian engaged couples always have in their own wedding planners, consultants and cooks. They opt to have their weddings between November to February. Having wedding parties in internationally branded hotels are becoming the new trend of rich Indian families. They choose a wedding resort in Phuket to hold the venue,” she said.
The TAT will promote to attract more wedding reception from South Korean and Australia.
She added that, “Phuket is also a popular destination among South Korean honeymooners.”
“There were three to four foreign couples who exchanged vows at the JW Marriott Resort in Mai Khao on the current high season,” she said.
The TAT also hopes to bring in more groups of European beauty pageant titlistsfor pre-pageant publicity events and photoshoots, as these are efficient ways of advertising Phuket to the Europeans, she said.
Phuket has already hosted three large groups: in 2009, 24 contestants from Poland; in 2008, 37 contestants from France, and in 2010, 20 contestants from Belgium. As a result of the promotion, Phuket has introduced a regular charter flight from France.
The TAT hopes that engaged couples will book a wedding resort in Phuket and will keep occupancy rates high for the rest of the high season.
