The Most Popular Video Games For May 2018

In terms of video games, Xbox One was on top of the list with the highest sales while hardware sales were taken home by Sony.

Looking at the entire month, it was a good for the video game hardware industry. The highest record of sales was recorded by these three companies – Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.

The number has increased in terms of spending by 13 per cent when compared to 2017 which equates to $685 million. Despite the decrease in sales in the software department, it was compensated by the increase in sales of games accessories and hardware.

Based on the date from the NPD Group, there was a 26 per cent increase in hardware spending compared to last year which puts the figure at 186 million while the year-to-date reached $1.3 billion which is 15 per cent higher than 2017. The 2011 record for unit sales was defeated during May 2018 while a new record was achieved since 2014 for the total dollar spending.

A record high was also achieved from sales of accessories as well as game cards. In fact it reached $225 million which means a 30 per cent increase. One of the most remarkable sales is that of headphones or headset wherein it doubled in comparison to the same period last year.

Software sales which cover PC gaming, hadheld and console are not so good because it declined by 4 per cent compared to May 2017. Note that the figures only cover video game revenue in the United States and excludes free-to-play games such as Fortnite.

The top five includes State of Decay 2, God of War 2018, Detroit: Become Human, Far Cry 5 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Included are other popular games such as Grand Theft Auto V, Mario Kart 8, NBA 2K18 and Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition.
